Photographic Memory: Jackie Lee Young

The best way to describe our friend and all around dreamboat Jackie Lee Young is: visionary. Quite literally, she has eyes on the world. She's seeing things others might miss. She sees the color and the light and the beauty and the humanity of the world in technicolor and translates it for the rest of the world to see.

Jackie has been a longtime collaborator of Far West and El Cosmico, capturing the visual essence of who we are and telling our story for over a decade. She's also a globe-trotting band/concert/festival/celebrity photo documentarian extraordinaire, having shot for the coolest people and events around the globe. Here, we ask our pal to turn the lens around a tell us a bit about her world.

Epic travel story: The entirety of the tour with the band Khruangbin (winter of 2021 and March-December of 2022). I have never experienced travel so absolutely amazing and bonkers. Some by bus in America and in the UK, some by RV during the summer of 2022, and in Oceania and Asia by plane during the winter of 2022. Our travel days would be flights from Osaka to Singapore and then Singapore to Australia. Changing hemispheres and seasons, etc etc. Australia doesn't have tour buses so we flew almost every day. WHAT! That's insane. Our first tour by bus in 2022 was my first time ever being on a tour bus let alone living in one. I was car sick for 3 weeks and it was insane. I saw America and the world in ways I had never imagined possible. The best bus experience is a tie between waking up on the way to the venue in Montana and sitting with the driver winding through the landscape and the double-decker busses in the UK. There is a lounge on the second floor of them and it's all windows so it's like you're in the best travel dream possible winding through the landscapes of England.  The worst is a tie between the Summer of 2022 and the late winter/early spring. Summer of 2022 there were no tour buses so we got an RV and a Bandwagon to travel the Northeast for that leg of the tour. No suspension, no black-out curtains, all noise, shaking, and banging all the time. We had to put most of our belongings in the sinks overnight and my desk folded down into a "bed" and I don't think any of us slept for 8 or 9 days. The second worst was when I stayed on the bus alone while the band flew from Chicago to NYC and I was alone in the giant tour bus during an ice storm driving in the night from Chicago to NYC, it was so crazy and super surreal to be there all alone.

*Another favorite is when I traveled in China in 2008, we took the wrong bus to the wrong city and didn't realize it until we were in a cab for about three hours not understanding where we were going. Additionally, I went to Thailand once and stepped on a sea urchin and had to completely change my plans for travel and stay in a hut on the beach until my foot was well enough to fly back to San Francisco.

Far West favorites: Every generation of the robe. I have all of them. I sleep in them and sometimes wear them all day, depending on the day! I travel with them and all of the members of my immediate family have at least one.
